Yesterday Microsoft released a small utility for Media Center Edition to warn users of potential issues with, or switch their preferred MPEG2 Codec (DVD Decoder) if more than one is installed on their systems. The MPEG 2 codec is used by Media Center for viewing Live TV and DVD's, the playback of DVR-MS, MPEG and some AVI videos. The utility warns users about potential compatibility problems for their MPEG2 codec such as, is it Media Center compatible? Is there likely to be an issue playing DVD content? or issues surrounding synchronizing TV content from the Media Center PC to a portable Media Center device.

This utility:
• Lists all the MPEG-2 video decoders that appear in your Windows registry (a database that contains information about the hardware and software installed in your computer).
• Indicates whether each decoder listed in the registry is marked as compatible with Windows XP Media Center Edition and whether any decoder listed in the registry is marked as the preferred video decoder.
• Indicates whether each decoder listed in the registry is marked as compatible with the synchronization feature of Windows Media Player 10.
• Lets you designate which installed decoder that you want Windows Media Player 10 to use when synchronizing DVR-MS files to a portable device. This is known as the preferred video decoder.
• Lets you undo any changes the utility makes to your Windows registry.

Thanks very much to Matze, who sent in some feedback regarding the Media Center 2004 SP2 slipstream guide.

It would appear that the problem causing setup to prompt for files is the cab files used in the CMPNENTS folders no longer exist. By creating a 0Kb file called MEDIACTR.CAB in your \CMPNENTS\MEDIACTR\I386 folder and NETFX.CAB in your \CMPNENTS\NETFX\I386 it will allow installation to complete properly without stopping to prompt for mcdftreg.inf or SmartNav5.js. This is great news, especially so if you wanted to perform a true unattended setup. I’ve updated the guide steps to include this.

Okay sorry for the dodgy matrix refrence :) MCE Reloaded is basically a little tool I've been working on which allows you to reset the configuration on a Media Center 2004 PC. During my time using Media Center I've found that sometimes removing specific parts of Media Centers registry and application data can be benificial if changing hardware, or Media Center has simply got itself into a bit of a tiz (particularly performance oddities surrounding MyTV UI and Guide).

The application has a few modes of operation. If you simply run it, Media Center will be shut down, the application data removed and HKLM MCE Settings will be removed. Doing this in itself is enough to have removed the guide, upcoming recordings and trigger the first run wizard again. The other modes come in the form of command line switches

The RC 3.5 version however has been working very nicely, using the PRX encoding profiles supplied with the application allowed me to get a 30 min recording (1.10Gb) down to 380Mb in CBR mode. But if you fancy building your own custom PRX profiles you can take more control over the conversion. Really the result you end up with is quite impressive. MPEG2 isn&#8217;t really the best format to be holding your media around in if you have a lot of it that you wish to keep. So if you've not yet been able to obtain a Media Center 2004 upgrade from your OEM, SP2 can help here.  This update doesn't provide any new features that were not included in the last release (MCE 2004 with Q830786 installed), this is mainly a bug fix. Q830786 is a fairly important  update to apply if your running Media Center. From personal expirence I've found it to greatly improve the reliability, and to a Certain extent the performance of the Media Center UI. Good new for us European users is that a few of the bugs which existed in the release build with regards to Digital Video Broadcasts (DVB-T/Freeview) were corrected. Though a number of DVB-T issues still exist.

Other major changes in this update (Build 5.1.2600.1321) are:

Terrestrial Digital Broadcasting Services

  • Channel lineup editing now supports editing on a per-channel basis. When you edit services in Terrestrial Digital Broadcasting Services (DVB-T), you will only see one service next to each channel number. You will not see multiple services associated with the same channel number.
  • Added support to enable two zoom modes for 4x3 DVB-T users only:
    • Zoom modes:
      • Normal
      • Zoom to fill (clipping left and right)
    • Windowed mode: The 4x3 DVB-T users will remain in the current zoom mode and continue to display the Zoom button on the More Info panel.
    • Remote codes and keyboard shortcut: The remote codes and keyboard shortcut will work for 4x3 DVB-T users.

DVR/Recording

Back to back recordings no longer cause the second recording not to be recorded.

Program Guide

  • Media Center Edition now pauses for 30 seconds after it resumes from Standby before it tries to update the Program Guide. This permits computer using wireless networking cards time to reconnect to the wireless network.
  • This fixes the German presets for Channel 1 so that they now work correctly.
  • For users in the United Kingdom, Channel 1 now can be mapped to BBC1.

Suspend/Resume

  • After resuming from suspend, you no longer see a black screen.
  • This update fixes several video errors that occur after resuming from standby.

Teletext

Reveal Text will remain onscreen until it is turned off. Previously, the Reveal Text feature turned off when you viewed rolling subpages.

TV Playback

  • You can now stop VCD playback without stopping any TV recording that is running in the background.
  • Software installations are now not delayed when you record a TV program in the background at the same time.
