If you have not been to my utilites page for a while at http://www.salloway.org.uk/mediacenter/util/index.htm you may notice a couple of new things.

First is a new application called Ident Set which is kind of 'run in compatibility mode for Media Center 200x', as close as you can be by manipulating the ident registry key and IE user agents. There is also an auto detect feature to help you find the correct setting for your machine/tell you what version is actually installed.

Earlier this month I put up a beta version of Configuration Reset 2, no angry emails yet which is always a good sign :) The main inspiration for a new version was Vista, although it will work on Media Center 2005. Ironically the beta I put up had to be restricted from running on Vista due to bugs in the current public version when used with it. In 5472 it was a lot better so I am hoping to get a Vista enabled one out for the public RC1.

The Vista betas of Tuner Priority has been out since about April, however that branch is what I am actively developing from now since it also runs on MCE2005. If you run the final v1.02 MCE2005 version and are told that your OS is not valid AND are not using the English Edition of Media Center, please use the Vista beta version as it contains some localisation fixes also.

At the moment I am moving my Media Center content from the old Linux mvps.org server over to the newer one (which hosts this blog) on Windows Server 2003. As part of this I've put up v1.03 of my Media Center Reset tool, there are not any major death causing bug fixes in this version from the version that was on last months Windows XP Official Magazine coverdisc (luckily :-)). But I have made some changes in the area of backing up and restoring the recording schedule which make that work much better. There is also a beta version of my tuner priority setter for Media Center 2005 which is my first attempt at a useful application written in C#.

Yesterday Microsoft released a small utility for Media Center Edition to warn users of potential issues with, or switch their preferred MPEG2 Codec (DVD Decoder) if more than one is installed on their systems. The MPEG 2 codec is used by Media Center for viewing Live TV and DVD's, the playback of DVR-MS, MPEG and some AVI videos. The utility warns users about potential compatibility problems for their MPEG2 codec such as, is it Media Center compatible? Is there likely to be an issue playing DVD content? or issues surrounding synchronizing TV content from the Media Center PC to a portable Media Center device.

This utility:
• Lists all the MPEG-2 video decoders that appear in your Windows registry (a database that contains information about the hardware and software installed in your computer).
• Indicates whether each decoder listed in the registry is marked as compatible with Windows XP Media Center Edition and whether any decoder listed in the registry is marked as the preferred video decoder.
• Indicates whether each decoder listed in the registry is marked as compatible with the synchronization feature of Windows Media Player 10.
• Lets you designate which installed decoder that you want Windows Media Player 10 to use when synchronizing DVR-MS files to a portable device. This is known as the preferred video decoder.
• Lets you undo any changes the utility makes to your Windows registry.

Okay sorry for the dodgy matrix refrence :) MCE Reloaded is basically a little tool I've been working on which allows you to reset the configuration on a Media Center 2004 PC. During my time using Media Center I've found that sometimes removing specific parts of Media Centers registry and application data can be benificial if changing hardware, or Media Center has simply got itself into a bit of a tiz (particularly performance oddities surrounding MyTV UI and Guide).

The application has a few modes of operation. If you simply run it, Media Center will be shut down, the application data removed and HKLM MCE Settings will be removed. Doing this in itself is enough to have removed the guide, upcoming recordings and trigger the first run wizard again. The other modes come in the form of command line switches

/regonly - does only the registry settings minus tuner hardware settings and leaves application data intact (Program Guide and Upcoming Recordings)

/tuner - full clean including tuner hardware

/tuneronly - only removes tuner registry data

Please note however I do not offer support for this application, although not intended its use may permanently damage your data, Media Center or Windows install. Use this application at your own risk.

As the name suggests it converts <st1:place w:st="on"> <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">DVR-MS</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Media</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Center</st1:PlaceType> </st1:place> recordings into Windows Media 9 videos. Various beta versions have been around for a while but I was unable to get it to work with my PAL DVB-T recordings correctly. The RC 3.5 version however has been working very nicely, using the PRX encoding profiles supplied with the application allowed me to get a 30 min recording (1.10Gb) down to 380Mb in CBR mode. But if you fancy building your own custom PRX profiles you can take more control over the conversion. Really the result you end up with is quite impressive. MPEG2 isn&#8217;t really the best format to be holding your media around in if you have a lot of it that you wish to keep.
