MCE was a PowerToy released for Media Center 2005 which allowed access to certain
settings which are not exposed in the Media Center UI, and otherwise would require
manual registry editing to modify. When Update Rollup 2 came out the existing version
of Tweak MCE did not recognise it as a supported version of

Media
Center

since the version number changed from v3.0/v3.1 (Update Rollup 1) to v4.0. In
addition to supporting Rollup 2 there are a few extra options included in this version
for some of the new features such as My DVDs and overscan.

Today I placed the v1.0 of my Media
Center reset tool 'MCE Reloaded' for Windows XP Media Center 2004 for download.
I also changed the name to Media Center Configuration Reset.

Changes since Beta 2:
Change:
UI Names consistent
Change: Console calls suppressed
Change: Debug messages turned
off
Change: Prevents restricted
user running the application
Change: Most aggressive setting becomes the default choice
Change: Command line switches changed (/tuner removed – as it is the default
now)
<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Fixed:

Media

Center

Edition does not have to be installed on drive C and can use a non standard Windows
folder name.
New: User can graphically
choose options previously only available though command line switches.
New:
Reset offered after max and standard mode<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

>

Really these additions (bar one)
where just little add-ons to what was already in place, making things a bit more user
friendly. Glad to say I didn't actually have to modify much of the core code,
other than the small matter of me being an idiot and hard coding the ehome
folder location as c:\windows\ehome in earlier versions. It
seemed to be behaving itself quite well while I was giving it a few test runs through,
but if you spot any bugs hiding let me know.

http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/host/VB6/mcereload/

Okay sorry for the dodgy matrix refrence :) MCE Reloaded is basically
a little tool I've been working on which allows you to reset the configuration on
a Media Center 2004 PC. During my time using Media Center I've found that sometimes
removing specific parts of Media Centers registry and application data can be benificial
if changing hardware, or Media Center has simply got itself into a bit of a tiz (particularly
performance oddities surrounding MyTV UI and Guide).

The application has a few modes of operation. If you simply run
it, Media Center will be shut down, the application data removed and HKLM MCE Settings
will be removed. Doing this in itself is enough to have removed the guide, upcoming
recordings and trigger the first run wizard again. The other modes come in the form
of command line switches

/regonly - does only the registry settings minus tuner hardware
settings and leaves application data intact (Program Guide and Upcoming Recordings)

/tuner - full clean including tuner hardware

/tuneronly - only removes tuner registry data

Please note however I do not offer support for this application,
although not intended its use may permanently damage your data, Media Center or Windows
install. Use this application at your own risk.

<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />A
great little utility that I’ve been using for the last few days is one called
DVR 2 WMV. As the name suggests it converts

DVR-MS
Media
Center

recordings into Windows Media 9 videos. Various beta versions have been around for
a while but I was unable to get it to work with my PAL DVB-T recordings correctly.
The RC 3.5 version however has been working very nicely, using the PRX encoding profiles
supplied with the application allowed me to get a 30 min recording (1.10Gb) down to
380Mb in CBR mode. But if you fancy building your own custom PRX profiles you can
take more control over the conversion. Really the result you end up with is quite
impressive. MPEG2 isn’t really the best format to be holding your media around
in if you have a lot of it that you wish to keep. Performance isn’t too shabby
either which is always nice.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The application has 2 major modes, a regular desktop
standalone application, a

Media
Center

application (ala Primetime). There is in addition a command line edition which is
pretty nice as with one command you can tell it for example to convert every recorded
instance of shows which share a common title.

Media
