The Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Program was started in the mid 1990s as a way to recognise those members of the general public who devoted their time and considerable computing skills, on a voluntary basis, to helping users 'in distress' in the various newsgroups hosted by Microsoft. There are now around 1800 MVPs worldwide who actively participate in the Microsoft Technical Newsgroups. Many are IT consultants, some are published authors or technical instructors, and there are those who have no formal training but have an in-depth level of practical experience.

In a Nutshell:

Windows XP Media Center 2002 is a superset edition of Windows XP Professional containing additional capabilities for Home Entertainment which are not present or not possible to achieve easily out of the box on other editions of Windows.

These features enable the ability to view digital media on your machine (all pictures, video's and music) via a graphically driven user interface. The special part is you are able to do this using a remote control device. Windows Media Center also features the ability to record and pause live TV on demand, and allows you to automatically record an entire series of a program with 2 button presses.

The recorded TV shows are recorded in a format called dvr-ms which is very similar to the asf file format, the recorded shows are made up of MPEG2 streams and meta information to store details about the program. Using the correct software such as Sonic's MyDVD product it is possible to record these shows into DVD's which can be used in most set-top DVD players. Windows Media Center is an OEM product which means it can only be acquired with a new Media Center PC or for development use as part of an MSDN subscription. At this point you cannot upgrade current machines to be Media Center machines (legally).

Common Media Center Issues

Before contacting support you should check the Windows Media Center FAQ, most common issues are contained here

If your having issues installing Media Center or Tablet PC Edition from MSDN ISO CD Images because setup prompts for 'Service Pack 1 CD', try writing the CD1 image again with Alex Feinman's ISO recorder. The Service Pack 1 CD message appears to happen most frequently on the newsgroups with people burning CD1 in an older version of a certain CD Writer package which can cause minor corruption to the disc.

NB: Media Center 2002 is available only in North America, Canada and Korea .

If your interested in Media Center, you should stop by www.thegreenbutton.com, this site has some great content including links to a 'Simple DVR editing and DVR-MPEG/MPEG-DVR conversion utility.'
